Docker based reverse proxy with NginX for multiple domains

I'm trying to create a docker based multi-container setup with a reverse proxy for multiple domains to serve, where the websites, the databases and the nginx based reverse proxy run in containers, but I don't know what am I missing (I'm new to nginx).

Details:

  • NginX based docker container for reverse proxy
  • There are 2 domains I own
    • e.g.: my_example_domain_1.com, my_example_domain_2.net
  • I would like to put a container behind each domain name to serve the two domains
    • I would like to run two separated websites: e.g.: two WordPress websites
  • I need the NginX route between the two domains and corresponding containers

My example: (basedir: multi-container)

nginx_revproxy/default.conf:

server {
    listen       80;
    server_name  localhost;

    location / {
        root   /usr/share/nginx/html;
        index  index.html index.htm;
    }

    error_page   500 502 503 504  /50x.html;
    location = /50x.html {
        root   /usr/share/nginx/html;
    }
}

server {
    listen       80;
    server_name  my_example_domain_1.com;
    location / {
        proxy_pass http://wp1:80;
    }
}

server {
    listen   80;
    server_name  my_example_domain_2.net;
    location / {
        proxy_pass http://wp2:80;
    }
}

./nginx_revproxy/Dockerfile:

FROM nginx:stable-alpine
COPY default.conf /etc/nginx/conf.d
EXPOSE 80/tcp
EXPOSE 443/tcp
CMD ["/bin/sh", "-c", "exec nginx -g 'daemon off;';"]
WORKDIR /usr/share/nginx/html

./docker-compose.yml

Sidenotes:

  • TEST: If I take out the revproxy from the docker-compose.yml file and execute docker-compose up -d on my desktop machine, I can access both websites (without the revproxy) on the container ports: localhost:8081, localhost:8082
  • PROD: When I execute docker-compose up -d on my server, the websites can't be reached
  • PROD: all containers seem to run without error

Does anyone have any idea?

Meanwhile I've figured it out on my own..
This is a working configuration (if anyone interested in the future):

nginx_revproxy/default.conf:

upstream domain1 {
  server wp1:80;
}

upstream domain2 {
  server wp2:80;
}

server {
    listen       80;
    server_name  domain1.com;
    location / {
        proxy_pass http://domain1/;
        proxy_set_header Host            $host;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $remote_addr;
    }
}

server {
    listen       80;
    server_name  domain2.com;
    location / {
        proxy_pass http://domain2/;
        proxy_set_header Host            $host;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $remote_addr;
    }
}
